We’re about to get “Stupaked” again

UPDATE 2/10 — It’s Happening
Obama has announced his “compromise” on this issue. We’ve been “Stupaked.” See my original post from 2/8 below. Here are Action Items:

Action #1 — CALL TALK RADIO
Call national and local talk radio shows today and say, “WE ARE BEING STUPAKED.” When asked to explain, say:

“Obama’s compromise is the same trickery the regime pulled with Bart Stupak to pass ObamaCare in 2010. This compromise only applies to “religious” organizations but forces 95% of Americans to potentially violate their religious rights. This is not an issue only for religious organizations — I HAVE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS, TOO!”

(ORIGINAL POST FROM 2/8)

We’re about to get “Stupaked” again and as a result, Obama could get the upper hand with a key voting constituency in November. Allow me to explain.

As you know, there has been much uproar over the new HHS edict that requires nearly all health insurance plans to cover birth control, the “Morning After” abortion pill and even sterilization. Catholic leaders have led the way in arguing that this is an unconstiutional infringement on their religious liberties because the HHS rule does not exempt most religious charities.

Polls show that a majority of likely voters are against President Obama on this issue and Speaker Boehner has promised a bill to reverse this HHS mandate and polls

So the crucial Catholic base is getting energized, Obama seems to be on the run and the ObamaCare mandate is being exposed as an infringement on our rights. Sounds good so for. But….

We’re about to get “Stupaked.”

Perhaps you remember Congressman Bart Stupak. He is the allegedly pro-life Democrat who briefly held out during the key 2009 House ObamaCare vote. At the end of the day, Obama and Stupak struck a deal which saved face and really didn’t protect the unborn or the liberties of those who oppose abortion. And ObamaCare passed.

It’s about to happen again. Some compromise or “clarification” of the HHS edict will come forward which expands the exemption to include more religious charities (such as Catholic hospitals). We will think we won, when in fact we will have just lost in a major way with ramifications all the way to November.

That’s because the issue of the ObamaCare birth control and abortion insurance mandate is being framed as an issue for religious organizations. All the polling and discussion centers on whether religious organizations should be required to pay for such insurance because it is a violation of their religious liberties.

But what about companies and organizations that are not, by definition, “religious”? For example, just because my company is not expressly a religious charity, does that mean, as an employer, I do not have the same First Amendment rights as a Catholic charity?

If we fight this HHS battle on the “religious organizations” front, Obama wins on three very important points:

1. Since less than 10% of Americans work in the non-profit sector and only a portion of those work for a “religious” non-profit, an Obama “compromise” on religious organizations would still leave the unconstitutional abortion/birth control mandate in effect for the vast majority of Americans.

2. Even fighting the battle on the “religious” argument concedes that the ObamaCare mandate has some grounds of legitimacy for ‘non-religious” companies. It doesn’t. The mandate is unconstitutional and should be opposed not in the narrow theatre of “religiuos” organizations but on the broad foundation of the Constitution.
3. If we get “Stupaked”, Obama could succeed in diffusing the issue of ObamaCare among Catholic voters. In 2008, Catholics represented 27% of the vote and went for Obama 54-45%. In 2010, Catholics supported Republicans by 54-44%. Catholics could decide who wins the White House and the Senate.

Grassfire Nation will be responding specifically to the HHS edict very soon. Be watching for that.

Sorry Steve, but this isn’t about Catholics and all the rhetoric that will follow. This is an all attack against the trampling of religious liberty and if you can’t see that then I wonder what you are seeing. This is a man that talks out of both sides of his mouth and yet men like Stupak swallowed the out and out lie… when are we going to wake up and see what this administration is all about… they hate the Constitution and want to rewrite it. Would you like them to rewrite the Bible to accommodate Nancy Pelosi’s views or Ginsberg’s comments… gee I guess I will soon be called a zealot… oh wait, they already have!

    • Myrna says:

You are right–this is not just a Catholic issue, it is an arrogant attack by the egotistical obama on America and all its freedoms.
If he is going to force organizations to add contraceptives to their ins. coverage, he should have them add feminine products to it also as they are necessary to all women before menopause. Makes more sense to cover them then it does to cover contraceptives. Contraception should be an individual thing and if a woman really does not children, she can have her tubes tied–a one time expense.

  2. ReneDuarte says:

Steve, good job bringing awareness to the political aspect and risk of opposing this legislation. However, much like the Keystone pipeline decision, Obama seems to be more absolute than political in compromise. It’s usually all or nothing with him and hence the recent House stalemates with his preposterous bills.

Great post. I knew when they trotted it out is was bait, willing to take some short term negatives to get people from noticing the man behind the curtain.

  5. Why are the republicans (conservatives) sitting on their collective asses? You promised us change and you give us crap. There have been at least 16 times I can count that Obama should have been impeached, And not one dare I say “congressman” can pull his head out of his ass long enough to put a viable sentence together in opposition> Rick Santorum has been the only person with values that dares to speak the truth and now he is being put on the firing line. Its time to wake up kids !!! Obama is a commie, I am too old to fight….so they say…..but I can VOTE…..and if push comes to shove …I will fight to my last breath. Change us back from a Socialist society back to a REPUBLIC… READ !!!!!!! READ!!!! the truth!

  6. obama has hurt our country from the first when he did not have a birth certificate or social security number, plus not being an American citizen. I don’t care that he’s black but I do care that he is hurting our citizenship and our freedom. He has Power from Criminals that we need to wake up and STOP HIM. Give us our liberty and justice for all. Give us back our country, he doesn’t deserve to be our president.

  7. Thomas D. Bennett says:

Obama is a menace to our continuance as a representative republic of free and sovereign, independent citizens. The Constitution’s plain meaning in the freedom of exercise of religion clause is that the federal government has NO right to say or rule or legislate to ANY effect upon the citizenry’s practice of faith.
Obama and all those representatives and senators who passed Obamacare into law have violated both the Constitution and their oaths of office. They all deserve impeachment, conviction, and removal from office. NOW — before Obama and his “progressive” socialist alinskyite thugs build upon the “success” of unlawful precedents in Obamacare not contested and repealed, thereby getting away with destroying the Constitution, nullifying the representational functions of House and Senate, and completely trashing our inalienable rights.

  8. Jim Hatfield says:

Got to say that I’ve never been so sick and tired of stinking propaganda as I’ve gotten this week. You migrants are real quick to call yourselves Patriots and Constitutional Americans until it effects the stinking Catholic Church which in it ever push and rush for world dominance is constantly interfering in We the American Peoples business. My Forefathers the Founders of this nation and the signors of its Constitution, not a one of which was a whinny Catholic, most be rolling in their graves. This has absolutely nothing to do with any Church or it’s beliefs. This has everything to do with the rights of everyone who works for an employer. If a Church can’t support Americans of all beliefs then it should get out of the secular world of business which will put an end to the problem. I as an employer can’t discriminate against someone because of their race, age, Religion etc. and as an employer neither can a Corporate arm of a Church. As MY Forefathers would have it its absolutely none of YOUR damn business what I do. I’m not forcing my beliefs down your throat, after all that would interfere with your Constitutional rights , and you had better think long and hard and have purchased transportation back to your homeland before you get the thought of shoving yours down mine. Obama has this week presented another perfect example of text book communist teachings in that he’s once again shown us how easy it is to separate and divide and cause discourse amongst the people. Like fool’s you all fell for it.

  9. Kay says:

It is about time someone started listening. I should say Religion is stepping all over my rights as a citizen and trying to control my life. There are women out there who are actually allergic to being pregnant, there are countless blood disorders that make it very dangerous for the mother, the fetus has too many complications to overcome or the pregnancy is not viable and regrettably the pregnancy has to be terminated due to the life threatening situation of the mother. It is not easy going through these situations but a woman’s life does matter and a woman should not be forced to go trough a pregnancy just because they do not have the money or other resources when their life is being threatened by the pregnancy or due to others pushing their opinions about abortions. Sure there are a few who terminate the pregnancy because they do not feel they are ready or they do not want anymore But the numbers are smaller than many make you believe. It is about time someone spoke up and let the Insurance Industry know they cannot make the choice and it will stay between the physician and patient. At least Obama has done something right so far.

    Steve,

I have preached for 30 years that the ills of this country can sqarely laid at the feet of congress. I read every day that most people consider “congress” as meaning only the House. People”congress” means both the House and Senate. Our gutless Republican congress has let Obama get by with all unconstitutional Executive Orders that he brings forth without substantual hue and cry to the media. They should MAKE the media carry their message. It can be done with some guts. We should ask the newby House Republicans how and what for were they elected. They are all giving in to the evil empire of The World Bank, The IMF, The Federal Reserve Bank and George Soros, Obama’s boss. We must put pressure on them.

    To Robert Bridgeford,

Sir, I am 81 years young and still deer hunt. Therefore, I can still charge a hill, sight a rifle and pull a trigger. If we don’t get people in Washington with some common sense and without personal agendas, Obama is going to get 4 more years. Before his additional 4 years are up we will have to physically fight to protect our freedom.

I am still under the impression that ObamaCare is still Illegal and Unconstitutional!?
By the way it sounds here lately the People have given up on the fact the Law is Illegal just as our so called President!!!
Our lying Congress told us as soon as the new Congressmen took office they would repeal ObamaCare, so much for anything anyone promises on the Hill!!!
So much for the People fighting the corruption within our government!? All the legislation before Congress has no significant value as to the fact, all legislation passed is null and void as we have an Illegal President signing the legislation into Law!
Are the People to do anything whatsoever about the fact we are presently living under a Tyrannical Government riddled with corruption and in the process of overthrowing our US Constitutional Republic!?
Are we to do anything other than complain and “B” about it all instead of making a stand, force our Honest Portion of Government do their duty in stopping the Treason and if not them then the People their selves must make a physical stand against the Tyrannical government as demanded by the US Constitution !?

Did you all forget that the DEM and the REPulicans are both the same. They are bought and sold by the elites in corporations and they all do their bidding. Your vote does not count and has not for quite some time because they promise all their promises to get your vote and then when they are elected they renig and do exactly what the elite tell them to do.

In order to have real change there needs to be a R3volution of a kind to give back voice to “We the People”

If anyone one of the candidates are elected: Newt, Mitt, Rick or Obama you can kiss our country goodbye as we will have all our freedoms gone.

  13. Jane says:

The whole healthcare law must be repealed. But we must see the recent health insurance mandate as a clear act against our constitutional religious freedoms. This is a battle theme which a vast majority of Americans will rally around. It is a very worthwhile focus. The religious liberty at stake involves all of the churches in the U.S.yes. But it also includes all Americans who would take up a public moral stand now and in the future. Our rights to speech are at stake, along with a slew of other liberties. It is important to protect these inalienable religious and conscience rights, because these were the rights that our country was founded on and upon which the constitution was structured. Without religious freedom and freedom of conscience, America will not be free at all.

  14. EOC says:

    Jim,
You are misinformed. Daniel Carroll and Thomas Fitzsimons were Catholics who signed the Constitution. Considering that there were few Catholics in British America at the time, that is a pretty good representation. All the signers were brave men and I doubt Carroll and Fitzsimons were very “whinny.”

  15. Javier says:

Stupaked, yes we are. This issue of religious organizations is minor in comparison with the big picture. It does not stop with companies and organizations that are not religious, it gets worse. Since it’s not politically convenient to use taxes for abortion, Obamacare forces you to pay anyway because of the individual mandate. Now if you have no group insurance you must buy insurance AND you can’t buy individual insurance that does not cover abortion because by law they all cover it. So like it or not your premiums pay for it. So much for that constitutional issue that you cant be forced to buy something and that conscience thing.

  16. Posted by Dr. Hanna on Feb. 11, 2012. You all are right…except that Obama isn’t just trying to re-write the D.O.I. and the C.O.T.U.S. and telling the S.Court what and what not to do. ALERT–He is trying to destroy it and us. (Mr. George Soros is helping through about 50 front/cover foundations nationwide to fund much of this madness.) Mr. Obama covertly hates the COTUS, while Mr. Soros hates the COTUS, America, and God, not necessarily in that order.
The Catholics are joining the Protestants(Christians) in this battle. AND, it is a tremendous battle! And, many of the Jews are joining us. Steve, you and others please make a note of my new e-mail address, and send this information to Maxwell, Iowa. A decor. Vietnam Vet.

  17. Ted Stomma says:

Just like the pizza place, who has a sale of “buy one, get the second one free”, Obama tells religious groups, buy health insurance for your employees and you get abortion, sterilization and birth control free. I wonder if anyone believes that the free stuff is actually free.

  18. AZ Don says:

Obama has announced he would compromise on his mandate that the Catholic Hospitals provide birth control pills, the morning after pill (abortion pill) and other acts which the Catholic Church finds repulsive and against their religious beliefs.

That concession, if it can really be called a concession, is actually only temporary. An appeasement, if you will, to stop the current problems being caused in an election year against obamacare and obama. It seems obama has let the cat out of the per verbal bag with the declaration. However, as Will Rogers once said, “it is much easier to let the cat out of the bag then it is to put it back.”

So it seems obama’s solution is the insurance companies pay for the contraceptives, and abortions and not the hospitals. How did he turn it around to payment? I was under the impression the problem was administrating the drugs or providing them not paying for them. Also has anyone seen obama change his mind before, after the fact and a good solution result? Who thinks if not fought all the way by the Catholics it will not later be imposed by this president? Probably down the road when there is less attention being paid then now and when the outcome may not be detrimental to his presidency. Or get quite so much publicity. Obama has demonstrated time and time again he does not talk the same actions he preforms. What he does and what he says he is going to do are, in most cases, if not all cases, not the same but opposite. That is his smoke screen!

Steve Elliot is correct in his analogy we have been “stupaked” by obama. However, an older analogy is “he double crossed” Americans. And nearly everyone understands that. But not just in the case of this recent attack on religion. As a matter of fact almost daily for over three years. Because we have been lied too and deceived, nearly daily for that three years how can it be he is still able to continue his charade without being exposed by the main stream media? Obama said there would be no lobbyist allowed within his administration, yet within thirty days after he took office he installed several. He also said he would be the most transparent president ever in the history of the United States, and he has turned out to the most secretive. Which was demonstrated quite well during the passage of obamacare. He also said he would bring the country together but instead has been a separatist. He passed The Affordable Healthcare Act, (obamacare) stating how wonderful it was and then issued over two thousand wavers to people and companies who thought it sucked, while forcing it on the rest of us. It would be easy to go on and on about his incompetency but we are all aware of his acts. However, incompetency may not be the right term because as every day passes it becomes more apparent his acts are intentional. But then he did promise us fundamental transformation. He just never explained it. By not explaining it he could never be claimed to be incorrect in his actions because there is no goal planned just like there is no budget, consequently, he has no guide lines or consequences to his actions. Is that smart or destructive?

  19. Don Sherwood says:

    Steve Elliott UNDERSTATES the situation!

In this country, the vast majority of health care is only administered by insurance companies. The employers “self-insure”! Thus, in the majority of situations, the employer pays, DIRECTLY, not the insurance company! This is simply a ruse by the Obama administration. They attempt to take 3 giant leaps forward and, if forced, take 1/2 step back and claim they’ve “compromised”. Not on your life! Sadly, far too many Americans pay too little attention to the details while the wizard behind the curtain is destroying that which has allowed our country to be great!

The Obama administration is the most lawless, anti-Constitution, power mad government I’ve seen in my lifetime! They are staggering in their disregard for freedom and liberty.

  20. Vince Sardo says:

Taken from one of author Milton Mayer’s, many best-selling books, and a passage from a book Titled:

    “They Thought They Were Free”

    The Germans, 1933-45

It seems appropriate at this time.

“You see,” my colleague went on, “one doesn’t see exactly where or how to move. Believe me, this is true. Each act, each occasion, is worse than the last, but only a little worse. You wait for the next and the next. You wait for one great shocking occasion, thinking that others, when such a shock comes, will join with you in resisting somehow. You don’t want to act, or even talk, alone; you don’t want to ‘go out of your way to make trouble.’ … In the university community, in your own community, you speak privately to your colleagues, some of whom certainly feel as you do; but what do they say? They say, ‘It’s not so bad’ or ‘You’re seeing things’ or ‘You’re an alarmist.’

“These are the beginnings, yes; but how do you know for sure when you don’t know the end, and how do you know, or even surmise, the end? On the one hand, your enemies, the law, the regime, the Party, intimidate you. On the other, your colleagues pooh-pooh you as pessimistic or even neurotic … the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked … But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between, come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C?”

How long before we Americans stop Obama from taking the next step?

    • Tom Bennett says:

God Bless you, Vince! My wife found this one for me one Saturday afternoon at a flea market in a church basement in a town 20 or so miles away from ours, about 20 years ago. I’ve wondered and studied longer than that to try to nail down how and why Germans with a large educational and business base –albeit recovering from WW1 and their own post-war recession, then the Great Depression and Soviet sympathizers –enabled and allowed national socialism to take hold.
Sadly, I believe that we’re in the rough equivalent of somewhere in1934 here now, even though we certainly don’t have the threat and disgrace of an internecine Night of the Long Knives; and certainly no political opposition seen –yet–as a target to be physically eliminated as the top leaders in the Sturm Abteilung (SA) were.

  21. Shirley Ritzheimer says:

I certainly agree with Steve and many who have commented that Obama’s latest proposal is also a travesty and to most is obviously that.
I would llike to humbly suggest you find additional adjectives than ‘Stupaked’ and add them to your warnings.
I completely agree with the comments (2/11/12) of the Hon. Dr. Harlan A. Hanna. I am convinced and have been convinced for a long time that Obama is being fed, directed, and supported by the enemy – human and spiritual.
Let us fight the good fight: not only with our words and legal action, but also with our prayers and fasting. May God deliver us from evil. May we, for the sake of our beloved nation, and in honor of God and our nation’s God-given Judeo-Christian foundations, repent and pray in faith to our Holy, Caring Creator, Almighty God, to hear our collective hearts’ cries.

  22. carolyn rose says:

i must confess that I am somewhat confused about the topic here. If it’s about abortion , birth control, religion- or the constitution then americans will
get into fights over the details and the real issues will be lost…but you can
bet that the pres. is way ahead of americans. He has had a lot of time to
hang out in D.C and figure out how to navigate the cesspool. He spent his
senate years, standing shoulder to shoulder to with every dirty politician
just learning the ropes. Meanwhile, americans voted for the lesser of evil
time and time again until they had created their own evil empire. The last
five pres. have stolen the tax payers retirements, and medicare and the
repubs stand ready to call us a burden on the gov. because we want
what we have paid in through years of hard work. As for abortion, americans
have been slaughtering their babies to the tune of now over 50,000,000
and that includes the Catholics.( Since the 70′s when killing babies became
a guarantee of a female rights to her own body. Gov. did that. It made genecide legal. Now, killing babies is just part of another day in america’s evil
empire. So, I don’t think the majority of churches give much thought to genecide these days. Is it insurance? No one is forced to take insurance
and use it for abortion so that is not the issue. Is it the constitutrion? I have
a copy of the constitution. It says nothing of allowing genecide, insurance
coverage or abortion or birth control. The framers felt people had the
common sense to rule their personal lives without gov. intervention.
So, what is the real question here?
